Deuteronomy 16:3

You shall eat no leavened bread with it. You shall eat unleavened bread with it seven days, even the bread of affliction; for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste; that you may remember the day when you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.

What does Deuteronomy 16:3 mean?

During Passover, God's people ate unleavened bread to remember their urgent escape from Egypt, when there was no time to let dough rise. This wasn't just a historical memory exercise, but a way to keep that rescue story alive in their bodies and minds year after year. When you eat something intentionally, you remember differently than when you simply hear a story, so this practice helped each generation feel connected to what God had done. The "bread of affliction" name reminds us that remembering hard times and God's faithfulness through them is part of what keeps our faith real and grounded.
