Deuteronomy 14:29
“The Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the foreigner living among you, and the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.”
What does Deuteronomy 14:29 mean?
This verse describes God's vision for how a community should care for its most vulnerable members, the people with no safety net: the Levites (who served the temple but owned no farmland), immigrants, orphans, and widows. Rather than hoarding surplus, God calls His people to actively invite these neighbors to eat and find satisfaction from what He's provided. The beautiful promise here is that generosity toward the vulnerable doesn't impoverish us but actually invites God's blessing into all our work and efforts. It's a reminder that our provision comes from God, and when we share it faithfully with those in need, we're aligning ourselves with His character and opening ourselves to His care.
