What does Deuteronomy 14:28 mean?
Every three years, the Israelites were instructed to set aside a full tithe (a tenth) of their harvest and keep it in their local community rather than bringing it to the central sanctuary. This created a practical system where local resources could support the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows living nearby, making help immediate and tangible rather than distant. The pattern reflects God's concern for both generosity and sustainability. Rather than a constant stream of goods flowing to one place, this rhythm allowed communities to care for their own vulnerable neighbors while also acknowledging that everything produced comes from God.
