Deuteronomy 12:31
“You shall not do so to Yahweh your God; for every abomination to Yahweh, which he hates, they have done to their gods; for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.”
What does Deuteronomy 12:31 mean?
God is warning the Israelites not to adopt the religious practices of the surrounding cultures, particularly the horrifying practice of child sacrifice that pagan nations performed for their gods. The point isn't that God is arbitrarily forbidding rituals, but that He's protecting His people from practices rooted in spiritual darkness and moral corruption. What makes worship acceptable to God is radically different from what passes for devotion in the world around us, and part of following Him means being willing to stand apart when others are heading toward something destructive. This verse reminds us that genuine faith honors God through obedience and integrity, not through empty conformity to whatever everyone else is doing.
