Deuteronomy 12:30
“be careful that you are not ensnared to follow them, after that they are destroyed from before you; and that you not inquire after their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do likewise.””
What does Deuteronomy 12:30 mean?
Moses is warning the Israelites not to get curious about the religious practices of the people they'll displace in the promised land, because that curiosity could lead them away from their own faith. It's easy to think "well, maybe their way works too" or "I'll just try a little of what they do," but he's saying that path leads you astray from God. The real danger isn't intellectual interest—it's the slow drift that happens when we start copying the spiritual choices of people around us without thinking about whether those choices align with what we actually believe. This speaks to something timeless: we're all vulnerable to gradually adopting the values and practices of our culture without noticing, even when they conflict with what matters most to us.
