Deuteronomy 1:22
“You came near to me, everyone of you, and said, “Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come.””
What does Deuteronomy 1:22 mean?
The Israelites are asking Moses if they can send scouts ahead to explore the land of Canaan before they enter it. It's a reasonable request born from natural caution, yet it becomes a turning point in their journey. Rather than trusting God's promise that He would lead them and give them the land, the people want to gather intelligence first, as though human investigation could somehow make God's word more reliable. This moment reveals how fear can make us second-guess what we've already been promised. The scouts do return with a report that terrifies the people, leading them to doubt God and wander in the wilderness for forty years. Sometimes our careful planning and need for reassurance, though they seem wise, can actually become obstacles to faith when they're rooted in anxiety rather than genuine discernment.
