Deuteronomy 1:17
“You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.””
What does Deuteronomy 1:17 mean?
Moses is reminding Israel's judges that fairness isn't optional or flexible. Whether someone is poor or rich, unknown or influential, they deserve the same careful attention and honest verdict. The real weight here is that judges shouldn't let fear of powerful people sway their decisions, because ultimately they answer to God, not to those they judge. That last line is practical wisdom too: when a case genuinely exceeds your wisdom or authority, admit it and bring it to someone with greater responsibility rather than making a guess. This reflects something deeply true about human limits. We all have boundaries, and recognizing them honestly, especially when others' lives hang in the balance, is itself a form of integrity.
