Daniel 10:17

For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? For as for me, immediately there remained no strength in me. There was no breath left in me.”

What does Daniel 10:17 mean?

Daniel has just encountered an overwhelming heavenly visitor, and he's trying to explain why he can barely respond. His body has shut down from fear and awe, as if every ounce of energy has drained away. He's not being poetic here, he's describing a real physical response to meeting something far beyond human experience. This moment reflects something we sometimes encounter in our own encounters with the divine, whether sudden or gradual. When we meet something genuinely transcendent, our usual confidence and words can fail us. Daniel is completely undone, which is actually honest about what it means to stand in the presence of something holy. His weakness becomes the real language of the moment, more truthful than anything he could manage to say.
