What does Colossians 2:21 mean?

Paul is quoting the harsh rules that some false teachers were pushing on the Colossian church, rules like "don't eat this food" or "don't touch that object." He's actually disagreeing with these strict commands in the verses around this one. His point is that following a bunch of external restrictions doesn't make you more spiritual or closer to God, especially when those rules have no real basis in Scripture. What matters is your heart and your relationship with Christ, not rigid dos and don'ts about physical things. If you're carrying guilt about whether something is "allowed," this verse is a reminder that your worth and standing with God doesn't depend on following human-made rules.
