What does Amos 5:8 mean?
Amos is calling people back to worship the God who has power over everything, from the distant stars to the rhythm of day and night. He's describing someone going through deep darkness (the "shadow of death") and reminding them that the same God who controls light and darkness, who commands the seas, is the one worth turning toward. The specific mention of constellations and natural forces wasn't just poetry to ancient listeners, it was a way of saying: this God is incomparably greater than anything you can see or imagine.
