What does Amos 4:5 mean?
God is calling out the people of Israel for a hollow kind of religiousness that looks good on the surface but misses the point entirely. They're making their offerings and announcing their generosity loudly, essentially bragging about how faithful they are, but their hearts aren't genuinely turned toward God or toward doing what's right. Using leavened bread in a thanksgiving offering was actually against God's instructions (leaven symbolized corruption in Israelite practice), so they're not even following through carefully.
