“Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Does evil happen to a city, and Yahweh hasn’t done it?”
What does Amos 3:6 mean?
Amos is asking rhetorical questions that seem obvious when you think about them: of course people run when a trumpet sounds a warning, and of course something caused that alarm in the first place. He's making the point that when disaster strikes a community, God is behind it, not random chance. This doesn't mean God enjoys causing suffering, but rather that he allows consequences when a society turns away from justice and righteousness, which Amos has been confronting throughout his message to Israel. For people experiencing hardship, this can be a difficult verse, but it anchors the idea that nothing falls outside God's awareness or control, even when circumstances feel chaotic and frightening.
