What does Amos 3:15 mean?
God is using concrete images here to show that no amount of wealth or luxury will protect people from judgment. The "winter house" and "summer house" refer to the dual residences that only the wealthy could afford, and "houses of ivory" points to homes decorated with expensive ivory inlays, a sign of extravagant riches. Amos is speaking to people in Israel who've grown comfortable through injustice and forgotten God, and he's saying their material security is an illusion. All that costly comfort, all those displays of power and status, won't stand in the end. It's a sobering reminder that God sees through our confidence in earthly things to what really matters.
