What does Acts 9:14 mean?
Ananias is speaking to the Lord about Saul (who will become Paul), expressing his very real fear. Saul has been traveling around with official permission to arrest anyone following Jesus, and now Jesus is asking Ananias to go meet this dangerous man. The "chief priests" were the religious authorities in Jerusalem who opposed the early church, and "binding" meant arresting and imprisoning people. What makes this verse so human is Ananias's hesitation, his honest prayer saying, "Lord, this person is a threat." Yet Jesus asks him to go anyway, which teaches us something profound: sometimes we're called to extend grace and welcome to people who seem like enemies, and God's plans often work through our faithfulness even when we're afraid.
