Acts 8:1
“Saul was consenting to his death. A great persecution arose against the assembly which was in Jerusalem in that day. They were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.”
What does Acts 8:1 mean?
The death being referenced here is Stephen's, a faithful follower who was executed for his faith just moments before. Saul (who would later become Paul) stood by approving of this violence, but what looked like a devastating blow to the early church actually became a turning point. When persecution forced believers to flee Jerusalem, they didn't abandon their faith but carried it with them into new regions, spreading the good news far beyond where it had been confined. This reminds us that even when circumstances feel dark and scattering, God sometimes uses difficulty to accomplish purposes we can't yet see. The apostles remained in Jerusalem to strengthen those still there, while others went out, and somehow both movements deepened the church's witness.
