Acts 7:49

What does Acts 7:49 mean?
Stephen is quoting the prophet Isaiah as he stands before the Jewish council, defending his faith in Jesus. He's reminding them that God is far too vast and magnificent to be contained in any building, no matter how grand or sacred. Even the temple in Jerusalem, which they considered the center of God's dwelling place, is tiny compared to the God who created and sustains everything. The question isn't really about construction or architecture. Stephen is gently challenging the assumption that following God means primarily maintaining the right physical location or religious institution. Instead, he's suggesting that what matters is having a heart that welcomes God's presence, because the Almighty cannot be limited by walls or geography. This was a radical and costly thing to say in that moment, but it pointed to a truth that Jesus himself had already been teaching: that God dwells with us spiritually, wherever we are.
