Acts 5:4
“While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God.””
What does Acts 5:4 mean?
Peter's words cut to the heart of what Ananias and Sapphira actually did wrong. They sold their property, which was completely their choice, and they could have given as much or as little as they wanted. The sin wasn't holding back money, it was the deception, the pretense of generosity they didn't actually feel. By lying about their gift to the church, they were really lying to God, treating the Holy Spirit as someone who could be fooled or manipulated. Peter's point is that God sees what's actually in our hearts, not just what we perform for others, and that gap between our public actions and private truth matters deeply to him.
