“When they had stood Peter and John in the middle of them, they inquired, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?””
What does Acts 4:7 mean?
Peter and John have just healed a beggar who'd been unable to walk his whole life, and the religious authorities are deeply unsettled. They bring the two disciples before the council and demand to know the source of their power, essentially asking, "Who gave you permission to do this, and under whose authority?" This question gets at something we all recognize: power and authority matter. When someone acts in a name or claims to represent a source greater than themselves, people want to know what's actually backing them up. The leaders weren't just curious, they were threatened, because they understood that Peter's answer would reveal whose kingdom he served. His reply, that healing came "in the name of Jesus Christ," would soon land him in danger for claiming allegiance to someone other than the established religious hierarchy.
