What does Acts 4:31 mean?
After Peter and John had been arrested and released by authorities who warned them to stop preaching about Jesus, they returned to their community and prayed together for courage and wisdom. God's response was dramatic and physical, shaking the very building where they gathered, which reassured them that their prayers were heard and their cause was endorsed by God himself. Being "filled with the Holy Spirit" here means they experienced a fresh empowering to speak about Jesus without fear, even though they'd just faced real danger. This wasn't a one-time experience for these early believers but a repeated filling that gave them boldness, or "parrhesia" in Greek, which means the kind of openness and freedom that comes from having nothing left to hide and everything to lose spiritually by staying silent.
