What does Acts 4:17 mean?
The Jewish leaders who opposed the apostles were trying to contain the movement they saw as dangerous. They decided that intimidation and legal threats would be more effective than outright punishment, hoping to silence Peter and John by warning them never to speak about Jesus again. Their strategy reveals something important: they recognized that the apostles' bold witness was spreading, and they feared its power. The irony, of course, is that threats designed to stop the message often end up proving its importance. When something must be silenced by force, it usually means people sense truth worth protecting.
