Acts 27:37
βIn all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.β
What does Acts 27:37 mean?
Paul is on a ship headed to Rome as a prisoner, and this verse simply counts the people aboard during a violent storm at sea. The number itself matters because it shows what's at stake in the crisis unfolding in the chapters around it. When the ship eventually breaks apart on the rocks, Luke's careful notation here makes the miraculous survival of all 276 people even more striking and meaningful to those reading about it.
