“Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man.”
What does Acts 17:29 mean?
Paul is telling the Athenians something radical: because you're made in God's image, you should know better than to reduce the divine to something you can carve out of metal or stone. He's not attacking their intelligence, but their worship practices, suggesting that if they recognize their own connection to God, their reason alone should tell them that God can't be contained in a human-made statue. This cuts to the heart of idolatry, which isn't really about the object itself, but about mistaking something limited and visible for something infinite and divine. When we're made by God and bear his image, we have an inner sense that points us toward something far greater than what our hands can make or our eyes can see. Paul is inviting them (and invites us) to trust that deeper knowing.
