What does Acts 16:23 mean?
Paul and Silas had been arrested in Philippi after casting a demon out of a slave girl, which upset her owners because they lost their profitable business. Rather than being taken to trial, they were beaten severely and then thrown into the innermost prison cell with strict orders that the jailer guard them closely, suggesting the authorities saw them as dangerous troublemakers. This moment of darkness and physical pain becomes the setting for something unexpected: Paul and Silas will pray and sing hymns at midnight, and an earthquake will shake the prison open. The jailer, finding the doors unlocked and afraid the prisoners have escaped, will hear their message of hope instead of judgment and become a believer.
