What does Acts 16:22 mean?
Paul and Silas had just freed a slave girl from a spirit of divination, which meant her owners lost the money they'd been making from her fortune-telling. Angry at their financial loss, these owners stirred up the crowd against the missionaries, and the city magistrates ordered them publicly beaten and stripped. What's striking is that this violent punishment came without any real trial or justice, simply because a mob demanded it and because Paul and Silas were outsiders without protection or status in that city.
