What does 2 Timothy 2:17 mean?
Paul is warning Timothy about how destructive false teaching spreads through a community, using the image of gangrene that eats away at living flesh. Just as untreated gangrene destroys healthy tissue, misleading words about faith—particularly the false claim (mentioned in verse 18) that the resurrection has already happened—poison people's beliefs and weaken the church from the inside out. Hymenaeus and Philetus are specific examples of people spreading this particular lie, and Paul names them so Timothy will recognize the danger and protect those he's responsible for teaching. The harshness here reflects how seriously Paul took spiritual deception, not because of pride but because he'd seen how these ideas could undermine people's entire relationship with God and hope in Christ.
