What does 2 Peter 1:5 mean?

Peter is describing a kind of spiritual growth that builds like a chain. He's saying that faith itself is just the starting point, and from there we're called to actively work at developing character (moral excellence), and then to deepen our understanding of what's true and right. The phrase "adding on your part all diligence" reminds us this isn't passive, it's something we participate in. It's the difference between believing something intellectually and actually letting that belief shape how we live and think. He's encouraging us that growth happens when we cooperate with God's work in us through intentional effort and openness to learning.
