What does 2 Kings 8:10 mean?
Hazael has come to the prophet Elisha on behalf of Ben-hadad, the king of Syria, who is ill and wants to know if he'll get better. Elisha tells him to give the king a message of hope, yet in the same breath reveals what God has actually shown him: the king will die. This isn't Elisha being cruel or contradictory, but rather pointing to a hard reality that prophets sometimes faced. He's honest about what God revealed while acknowledging the comfort that might be offered to someone who's suffering. The tension here is real and uncomfortable, which makes it human. Elisha seems to be saying that sometimes what we need to hear and what is actually true are not the same thing, and that's okay. We can offer encouragement while also reckoning with difficult realities, and faithful people sometimes had to hold both truths at once.
