What does 2 Kings 21:4 mean?
King Manasseh's actions here reveal a profound contradiction: he's building altars to foreign gods right inside the Temple, the one place Yahweh had designated as his dwelling place on earth. When God says "I will put my name in Jerusalem," he's referring to his commitment to make this city and its Temple the center of his presence and worship, yet Manasseh is filling that sacred space with idols and altars for other deities. This captures the heartbreak of unfaithfulness. Manasseh had inherited a Temple that represented God's covenant promise to his people, but rather than honor that gift, he was systematically corrupting it.
