What does 2 Kings 21:3 mean?
King Manasseh is undoing his father Hezekiah's faithful reforms, rebuilding places of worship for gods that don't exist and turning back toward idolatry. The "army of the sky" refers to the sun, moon, and stars that people around Judah worshiped as divine beings, thinking they held power over human fate and fortune. What makes this moment so stark is that Manasseh isn't just drifting away from God gradually—he's deliberately reconstructing the very altars his own father had torn down, almost as an act of deliberate rejection.
