What does 2 Corinthians 9:4 mean?
Paul is writing about a relief collection for the struggling church in Jerusalem, and he's gently warning the Corinthians not to leave him in an awkward spot. He's told the Macedonian churches (up north) how generous and eager the Corinthians are to give, and now he's worried that if Macedonian visitors show up and discover the Corinthians haven't actually followed through, everyone involved will feel embarrassed. It's a very human moment, really, where Paul admits he'd feel let down too, not just because of broken promises, but because he's staked his credibility on their faithfulness. The real point isn't shame or pressure, though, it's an appeal to integrity: when you commit to something good (especially helping others in need), following through matters because other people are counting on you.
