What does 2 Corinthians 5:16 mean?
Paul is describing a fundamental shift in how believers see people, especially Jesus himself. "Knowing after the flesh" means judging by outward appearance, status, or human standards, while "knowing him so no more" suggests moving beyond a merely physical or surface-level understanding. Before the resurrection, even those close to Jesus had to relate to him as they would any person. But Paul is saying that faith transforms our perception: we're no longer locked into evaluating each other (or Jesus) through purely human categories of worth, power, or earthly achievement. When we encounter Christ through the Spirit rather than just through physical proximity, everything shifts. This speaks to the deep work of faith in freeing us from shallow judgments about ourselves and others, inviting us to see with God's eyes instead.
