What does 2 Corinthians 12:8 mean?
Paul is describing a painful, ongoing struggle—something he calls "a thorn in the flesh" elsewhere in this passage—and how he repeatedly asked God to remove it. He didn't ask once and accept the answer; he came back to God three times, each time pleading for relief from something that was genuinely difficult for him to bear. What makes this verse so human is that it shows even a great spiritual leader wrestling with hardship and wanting it gone. He wasn't immediately peaceful about his suffering or ashamed to ask God directly for help. At the same time, the fact that he's describing this moment suggests he eventually learned something that changed his perspective, which comes in the verses that follow. For now, though, this captures the raw honesty of bringing our deepest frustrations to God and asking, even urgently, for things to be different.
