What does 1 Timothy 6:4 mean?
When someone gets caught up in endless theological or ideological arguments, they often develop a false sense of their own understanding. Paul describes a person who mistakes being argumentative for being knowledgeable, someone who loves the fight more than the truth. The real damage isn't just arrogance, though, it's the relational poison that follows: these battles breed jealousy between people, resentment, harsh words, and suspicion of one another's motives. Paul is essentially saying that obsessing over winning debates corrodes communities and individual hearts alike, leaving everyone worse off.
