What does 1 Timothy 6:3 mean?
Paul is warning Timothy (and the church leaders he oversees) to be cautious when someone's teaching doesn't match up with what Jesus taught or what leads people toward genuine devotion to God. The phrase "sound words" means teaching that is healthy and trustworthy, not distorted or self-serving. Paul isn't being rigid for rigidity's sake, but rather protecting the community from ideas that might look spiritual on the surface while actually drawing people away from God's character and Jesus's example. If someone's teaching consistently pulls away from Jesus's actual words and values, or if it produces pride, greed, or division rather than godliness, that's a red flag worth taking seriously.
