What does 1 Timothy 4:3 mean?
Paul is describing false teachers who impose strict, unnecessary rules on believers, forbidding marriage and demanding they avoid certain foods. He's pushing back against the idea that spiritual maturity comes through deprivation or self-denial taken to extremes. God made food and marriage as good gifts meant to be enjoyed with gratitude, not viewed with suspicion or shame. When someone tells you that closeness to God requires rejecting what God himself created as good, Paul is saying that teaching misses the truth about who God is and what he actually wants for us.
