“Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”
What does 1 Timothy 3:12 mean?
Deacons (or church servants) were expected to be faithful in their marriages and to lead their households with care and integrity. This wasn't about perfection, but about showing through your closest relationships that you can be trusted with responsibility in the church community. If someone struggled to manage their own family life well, it made sense they wouldn't be ready to serve others in leadership. The principle recognizes that our character shows most clearly in how we treat the people closest to us.
