What does 1 Thessalonians 4:9 mean?
Paul is affirming something beautiful here: his readers already understand what it means to genuinely care for one another. Rather than laying down rules about how to treat fellow believers, he's acknowledging that God himself has been working in their hearts, teaching them to love their community from the inside out. This doesn't mean Paul thinks they've perfected love or that they need no encouragement. Instead, he's recognizing that the foundation is already there, so he can build on it. When you know someone truly wants to do the right thing, you appeal to what's already growing in them rather than starting from scratch with commands.
