Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.

What does 1 Samuel 3:8 mean?

Samuel was a young boy serving in God's temple when he kept hearing a voice calling his name, but he didn't recognize it as God speaking to him. Each time he heard the call, he ran to his mentor Eli, thinking Eli had summoned him. After this happened three times, Eli finally understood what was happening and told Samuel that the voice was actually God calling to him directly. This moment marks when Samuel learned to recognize God's voice and became willing to listen, which launched him into his role as one of Israel's greatest prophets and leaders. The passage reminds us that sometimes we don't immediately recognize when God is trying to speak to us, and we need the wisdom of others to help us understand what's really happening in our lives.
