What does 1 Samuel 16:15 mean?

Saul's advisors have noticed his dark moods and emotional instability, and they're trying to make sense of what's happening to him. In the thinking of ancient Israel, unexplained mental distress was sometimes understood as coming from God, either as a consequence of disobedience or as part of God's plan. What they're really saying is that something spiritual and serious is at work in Saul's life, beyond what medical knowledge of their time could address. This moment reveals how isolated and troubled Saul has become, and how desperate those around him are to help him find relief. They genuinely believe that music (which they'll suggest next) might soothe whatever spiritual heaviness has settled over him, showing both their care and the limits of what they can actually do for someone spiraling into despair.
