What does 1 Samuel 16:14 mean?
When God's presence left Saul after he disobeyed, the Bible describes him becoming tormented and unstable, troubled by what it calls an evil spirit. This doesn't mean God sent darkness to punish Saul capriciously, but rather that without the Holy Spirit's steadying presence, Saul became vulnerable to destructive impulses, paranoia, and rage. His own worst thoughts and fears took hold. We see this play out as Saul grows increasingly jealous of David and erratic in his decisions, showing what happens when someone turns away from God and loses that inner peace and guidance. It's a sobering portrait of how spiritual emptiness can hollow out a person, even a king once anointed by God.
