What does 1 Samuel 15:17 mean?
Samuel is reminding Saul of something hard to hold onto when we've failed: that God saw something in him worth choosing, even when Saul himself couldn't see it. The prophet is essentially saying, "You know you didn't think you were leadership material, and yet God made you king anyway—so don't forget who selected you and why." This comes at a moment when Saul has disobeyed God's instructions, and Samuel is calling him back to remember his humble beginnings and the divine calling that shaped him. Sometimes when we're stuck in shame or defensiveness after making mistakes, it helps to recall that we were chosen and appointed for something larger than our failures, not erased by them.
