1 Samuel 1:13

Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

What does 1 Samuel 1:13 mean?

Hannah's silent prayer here captures something deeply human: sometimes our hearts are so full of longing that words barely escape our lips. She was pouring out her desperate desire for a child to God alone, moving her mouth in prayer but making no sound. The priest Eli, watching from nearby, completely misread her—he saw someone swaying and trembling with barely audible speech and jumped to the conclusion she was drunk. It's a poignant moment because it shows how invisible genuine spiritual struggle can be to others, and how easily we can misjudge what we don't understand. What looked like intoxication to Eli was actually the intensity of a woman bringing her most vulnerable petition before God.
