What does 1 Peter 4:17 mean?
Peter is reminding early Christians that being part of God's family doesn't exempt us from accountability, it actually intensifies it. He's saying that if God is serious about justice and holiness, he starts with those closest to him, those who've already heard the truth and claimed to follow it. Rather than being a threat, this is actually an invitation to take our own faith seriously: if we're willing to examine our hearts and submit ourselves to God's standards, we're living more honestly than those who reject him entirely. The implicit comfort here is that judgment for believers is ultimately about refining and drawing us closer to God, while for those who persistently turn away from his message, the consequences are far graver.
