“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin;”
What does 1 Peter 4:1 mean?
When Christ endured real physical suffering and death, he showed us what it means to surrender completely to God's will, even when it costs us everything. Peter is saying we should adopt that same mindset: a willingness to let go of our own comfort and desires so we can follow him more faithfully. When we stop chasing after what our bodies want and start prioritizing what God values instead, we naturally drift away from sin, because sin and that kind of surrender can't coexist in the same heart. This isn't about punishment or self-harm, but about the deep freedom that comes when we stop being controlled by our impulses and start being controlled by love for God and others.
