1 Kings 11:4

When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father was.

What does 1 Kings 11:4 mean?

Solomon's many wives gradually pulled his devotion away from God toward the religious practices of their own peoples, and over time his wholehearted commitment to the Lord weakened. The writer compares him unfavorably to his father David, who despite his own serious failings maintained a fundamentally faithful orientation toward God throughout his life. This verse captures something painfully real: how the relationships closest to us can subtly shift our values and priorities, sometimes without us fully realizing it's happening. It's less about blame and more about the sobering truth that even great wisdom and success can't protect us if we gradually loosen our grip on what matters most.
