“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.”
What does 1 John 4:18 mean?
When we're deeply loved and know it completely, fear loses its grip on us. This isn't about never feeling caution or concern, but rather the paralyzing dread that comes from shame, rejection, or punishment. John is pointing to something we experience: when we're certain someone loves us fully, we stop bracing for the blow we think we deserve. That freedom from dread is what "perfect love" does. The verse suggests that fear and love actually work against each other, and the more we let ourselves be loved without conditions or waiting for judgment, the more that anxious terror falls away.
