1 John 3:6

Whoever remains in him doesn’t sin. Whoever sins hasn’t seen him and doesn’t know him.

What does 1 John 3:6 mean?

John is making a bold claim here about what genuine connection with Jesus looks like. He's saying that when we truly stay close to Christ and let his presence shape us, sin loses its grip on us, not because we're perfect, but because we're transformed by relationship with him. The second part sounds harsh at first, but John isn't saying one mistake disqualifies you. He's describing a pattern of life: if someone is living in habitual sin without any concern or desire to change, that reveals they haven't actually encountered Jesus in a real way yet. Knowing Jesus means wanting to become like him, even when we stumble along the way.
