What does 1 John 3:17 mean?
John is asking a question that cuts right to the heart of faith: if we claim to love God, how can we turn away from someone in front of us who is suffering? He's not suggesting that having money is wrong, but rather that when we have resources and encounter genuine need, our response reveals what we actually believe. The practical challenge here is uncomfortable by design. It's easy to say we love God in theory, but our willingness to help someone struggling tells the real story about whether God's love actually lives in us. This doesn't mean you have to give away everything you own, but it does mean staying awake to the needs around you and responding with open hands rather than closed hearts.
