What does 1 John 3:15 mean?
John is making a bold claim here: that hatred in the heart carries the same spiritual weight as the act of murder itself. He's not saying the actions are identical, but that the root of murder, the desire to destroy another person, is present whenever we harbor real hatred toward someone, especially within our faith community. The underlying message is that God cares about what's happening inside us, not just our external behavior. When we nurse anger and contempt toward someone, we're cultivating something spiritually toxic that separates us from the life God offers. John uses the starkness of "murderer" to wake us up to how seriously our inner attitudes matter in our relationship with God, and to push us toward reconciliation and love even when it's hard.
