“Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him.”
What does 1 John 2:15 mean?
John is inviting us to examine what captures our hearts and attention. "The world" here doesn't mean nature or people, but rather the systems and values that pull us away from God, the endless chase for status, stuff, and self-gratification that leaves us spiritually empty. When we pour all our energy into accumulating things or proving ourselves, there's less room for the love of God to actually change us and shape how we treat others. This isn't about avoiding life or pretending material things don't exist, but about where our deepest loyalty lies. It's the difference between using things versus being used by them, between living for something and living for Someone. The hard truth John names is that divided hearts are real, and we can't simultaneously chase after both a God-centered life and a me-centered one with equal devotion.
